Last night we upgraded our existing cache for server files and steam workshop data, it now has a 10Gbps link to our servers where it had just 1Gbps before and a 1Gbps link to the internet.
It now also has 4TB of storage which is probably way to much for our needs but rather over spec than under spec.
So what does this mean for you?
Faster download times from steam workshop, faster rust server updates when its time for a force wipe and faster overall server install time whether it be a reinstall or a fresh install plus more.
Why did we do this?
We know waiting for things to download is a bore and you just want to jump into game, so if a file is already local it speeds up the whole process.
For example we will use rusts monthly update: you have over 7000 servers (accurate as of 12/03/2021) that all need to update with most servers doing that update when it goes live which will put a strain on steams servers and can slow down everyone who is downloading the update. With it being cached locally the server will pull its update from the cache rather then going out to steam and running the risk of being slowed down meaning your server will update faster!
For those games that use the steam workshop to pull the maps down each map rotation or restart such as Pavlov VR (PC version) this will mean map rotation is even faster!
This also mitigates the issue of not being able to download maps, server files etc. when steam goes down, as long as its in the cache you will still be able to get the files.
If you have any questions about this or if you have any suggestions of other sources you think we should cache then please open a ticket and let us know!
